How Is Money Made In The Rap Or Hip Hop Industry

When you look at the hip hop game today you will notice a very broad expansion of it's influence throughout the world from it's early years. It used to be where rap was restricted to mainly regional acts who could not expand beyond a certain market. Now with the leverage of the internet someone who was never heard of a few months ago can become a household name. One good example of this phenomenon is the rapper "Soulja Boy Tell Em." He was a local kid that made it big by doing his own Youtube videos.

I think rappers are very under appreciated and are not given credit for the vast amounts of money that they create to help fuel a countries society. First off a rapper is him or herself a brand thus making that rapper a business. Many rappers will register themselves as an L.L.C. because of this fact. A single rapper can set forth and be directly responsible for a huge chain of supporting business that will otherwise not exist. When a rapper first starts off he will need a manager, accountant, music lawyer, financial adviser, assistant, clothing stylist, hair stylist, publicist, and many other people to make himself a success and to maintain himself as a successful rapper. That alone makes a rapper a single example for how money is made in the rap game.

Businesses That Rappers Support Or Help To Create

As a rapper advances his/her career they provide business opportunities that otherwise did not exist before them. Everyone from management to attorneys are now receiving checks that are increasing their bottom lines from rappers and the affiliated entities surrounding the brand. Someone that may have only been what is called a "kitchen beautician" who does hair out of her home can be employed by a rapper to style her hair. Many times they will remain employed by that rapper for that rapper's entire career. The same with a barber who may work at a shop, a rapper's favorite barber will often be hired on as his personal barber and travel the country and world with the rapper making to keep up his appearance. Managers and security for rappers are employed and often times due to trust issues end being close friends and family members who fit these roles. Some of these people may not have had a job at that point. This injection of finances into that person's life help to support his family, send his kids to college, and pay for retirement and often helps fund additional small business. Those are some of the businesses that rappers support or help to create.

Rapper Supported Businesses

There are a vast number of supporting business for rappers. These business range from part time positions to six, seven, and even eight figure yearly jobs or careers for some. Below is a list of these and average salary ranges.

Producer - This is the person that produces the bulk of a rapper's music and spends many hours of the day in the studio with the rapper. Most responsible for making the beats and making sure the final product sounds as good as it can get. Producers are usually paid an upfront payment for each beat and then can negotiate points on album sales. Some well know producers can charge upwards of $100,000 for a single beat. But just their name alone can catapult a rapper's career overnight.

D.J. - Many times a DJ will be someone a rapper has known throughout his career's early days and he likes the way the DJ performs. The DJ will travel and perform with the rapper on tour and t.v. appearances. A D.J. normally receives a portion of the performance fees per show. Can make several thousands of dollars a show for well known acts. Many DJ's end up performing long after the rapper's career has ended. And sometimes a DJ's name can surpass the rapper that he performs with.

Manager - A rap manager handles every aspect of a rappers career. Salary is usually around 15% of a rappers income. For a rapper who makes $1,000,000.00 or more per year that will make this a $150,000 or more a year job.

Music Lawyer - This attorney handles the rapper's contract and represents him in any disputes related to his music such as clearances and the likes. These attorney can charge upwards of $250 - $500 per hour for their services.

Accountant - An accountant handles all of those big checks that a rapper receives from all of his or her various performances, music sales and business. He is responsible for paying the bills many times for a rapper and ensure his investments are OK. These accountants often charge similar hourly rates as a music attorney.

Assistant - This is often the most thankless position in any industry. You are tasked with doing whatever the rapper desires. Whether it's walking a mile to find his favorite cheesecake, or pet sitting for a female rapper's favorite dog. There are also rewards for this job besides a paycheck. Everywhere the rapper goes you are right by their side many times traveling the world on their dime and receiving nice dinners and gifts. This is usually a salaried position that can range from a few hundred dollars a week to a few thousand dollars a week. Not bad for a dog babysitter!

Hair Stylist - A hair stylist is usually a rapper's favorite hair dresser that they may have known before their rap career started. People are picky about who they let cut style their hair. A stylist usually travels with a rapper when she tours and makes public appearances to ensure that not one hair is out of place for those closeup face shots that paparazzi love to sneak around for. This is can be either salaried or a per diem. Perdiem means by the day. Pay can range from hundreds to thousands per week.

Personal Barber - Just as with the hair stylist the rappers usually knows this person and he regularly cuts his hair. A benefit to this one besides the similarity in pay with a hair stylist is that many barbers and hair stylist end up getting gigs with other rappers, musician, actors, and music business tycoons because of their work and relation to the rapper.

Record Label - These are the real winners. Labels are responsible for the financing of the whole project. No one usually get's paid until they do. If an artist is independent then he is normally the head or C.E.O. of the label. If he or she is signed to a major label they often have their own label or start on shorty after and hire their own staff to administrate the duties. Label execs can make millions per year in salary and millions more in bonuses. Independent label execs such a rapper himself benefits the most because he owns everything and controls everything himself.

This by far is not a full list of the jobs, careers, and business that a rapper can directly create or be responsible for. There are more people who make money off of what a rapper does that are a result of the trickle down effect. From t-shirt vendors, to food vendors at events, to local sneaker stores where a rapper will buy enough product to cover the store sales for the entire day. The effects are numerous and often go unrecognized.

You know, rap has changed a lot from it's birth. It is growing into a fine young man capable of independence and reliability. It's really a shame that society hasn't completely grasped the significance of poetry in rap. That the play on words is something that provokes the mind. I have to say there is some music that just turns me off completely, but to be able to rhyme, especially now that the rap game is in it's graduation through mediums, well it's absolutely intelligent.

More hubs on raps are necessary, thanks for being on the forefront.

@catalystsnstars: That you for comment the that was a very observant statement. Rap has surpassed every benchmark set before it and it continues to be a voice for the voiceless in many aspects. I will continue to write hubs on raps because I feel like that is my niche here on Hubpages.

So true. The rap industry is a multimillion dollar business that produces many jobs for people in all classes. Although rap didn't start out this way, it has evolved into a beautiful thing.

@ Blawger: Thanks for the comment. I have been a student of the rap game for quite a number of years and have watched and noted it's affects and influences both good and bad. At this point rap is has not only made it to a multi million dollar industry but it is a multi billion dollar industry. There are many cities in the United States that have a nice portion of their economies tied directly to the success of the rap game.
