What Is Freestyle Rap

Freestyle rapping is a form of rap where you are not using made up raps. A free style rapper usually makes up his rap rhymes on the fly or as he goes along. There are often misconceptions when you see a rap battle that everyone is freestyling their lyrics but that is not alway the case. Sometimes there will be rappers who have previously written and memorized their rhymes. This is technically not a free style.

In a battle rap situation a rapper is required to battle his opponent using words that he is making up right on the spot. A rapper can often times have a slight advantage if he has previously memorized his rhymes and perfects his punch lines. He may gain points from the audience or from the judges for his delivery and in that instant he is in my opinion cheating. A true free style rapper will be able to use his mind in the spare of the moment to conjure up witty words that attack his opponent without having to write them down and memorize them.

You can usually tell if someone is free styling or not. It is normally not hard to spot. If someone is freestyling which is off of the top of the head then you will hear it in his delivery and the words that he comes up with when you hear him spit his lyrics. Mostly a true freestyler will have say things about his opponent in his rhymes that he would only be able to notice about him being face to face. Like if you see someone freestyle and they include something that is in their immediate vicinity or if he is batting an opponent and he say something about the clothing or the jewelry he is wearing. A good deal of the time a pre written and memorized rap will have nice punch lines, but won't be able to include these details that they would only know when rapping against someone at that moment.

Another way you can tell if someone is really freestyling is if that person battle raps a lot. If he has faced many opponents then it will be quite clear if he is free styling. Someone that memorizes his rap song will eventually have to resort to using a previously used rap. This is where it can get embarrassing for some battle rappers. If your opponent has already hear you use that rap in previous battles and you don't realize it the he will either lip sync or rap the words right along with you. The crowd will "boo!" and you will definitely be exposed as a freestyle cheat.

You can use your freestyle skill to make money. There are a few ways that this can be done. First of all you can enter as many rap battles in your region as you can find and many of them offer nice cash prizes if you just happen to be the victor. Another way is to build up yourself enough buzz where you can begin selling you music and video footage of your rap battles and freestyles for some nice cash. Some free style rappers end up with enough of a following that they sign lucrative deals with major and indie labels and end up famous and rich. And if all else fails or even just to start your buzz and let people know your skill you can pick a nice corner or high traffic place locally and set up shop. Get you a ball cap, put it on the ground in front of you, play an instrumental on a boom box, and street perform your freestyles for everyone who walks by. If they like it they may drop a dollar in you hat. If they don't like it well then they just don't but you only need a small percentage of people drop you a dollar and you have a nice part time income on a daily basis that can fund other thing like t-shirts and self produced CD's and other promo items you can sell on your website or while you are out street performing. The sky is the limit in this day and age if you work hard and constantly at your craft.
