Writing A Hook For A Rap Song

In order to write a hook for a rap song you must know how to write a hook. A hook is also known as the chorus of a song. The chorus is the part of the song that comes in immediately after each verse is done. Hooks make up about 40% of the songs structure and plays about the same 60% in terms of the importance it plays to the song. Without the hook then you really don't have a song. The hook of a rap song is normally more well known than the lyrics in the verses of a song and many people find it easier to remember the hook than a verse. This makes it the most important part of the song.

How to write a Hook

When you are writing a rap song you need to have a subject or topic to write your rap song about. Many times coming up with a topic can be very difficult if you face writers block for any reason. That is where the hook can help you. I would define a hook as the summary of the rap song. Most of them you hear in rap songs will convey the message that is spread throughout the verses of the song. A good rap hook will tell the story of the song in 8 bars. The hook is repetitive and that is on purpose. A catchy song will have a hook that repeats the key words of the song a few times in it. The more something is repeated the easier it is for a person to remember and retain the information that they are hearing. Think of a song that you can't get out of your head and you find yourself saying it over and over again. Chances are the hook is the part of the song stuck in your head. If you can achieve this effect with your rap song hook then you have a success. This is the key to a good hook. A rap hook will have 8 bars to it. It should summarize the song. It should be somewhat repetitive in the key words of the hook and be catchy to anyone who listens to it. The hook can serve as inspiration for the verses if you have writers block.

I would suggest that you come up with your hook first. If you have a beat already picked out then you can use the beat to help with creating your rap hook. Play the beat a couple of times and let the beat speak to you. Listen intently to the instrumental and let it tell you what pattern to use for your hook. This will allow your mind to brainstorm words for you hook. Write down all the thoughts that come to your mind and create your hook. Once you have your hook written then you can use the hook to guide you to writing the verses to your song as well. The hook can also lend a title to the song. Take the main theme of the hook and create a title around it. What I mean by the main them of the hook is the strongest point or subject that the hook is about. Once you have your hook then the rest of the song is made a lot simpler.
